Meet GHK-Cu.

GHK-Cu is the copper-bound form of the tripeptide glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine, or GHK. In cosmetic ingredient labeling, you’ll usually see it as Copper Tripeptide-1.

What makes GHK-Cu interesting is that the peptide and the copper function as a complex rather than as two unrelated ingredients. GHK has a strong affinity for copper, and early research proposed that one of its biological roles is helping make copper available to cells. Copper itself is required for multiple enzymes involved in normal tissue structure and repair, which gives this very small peptide an unusually broad biological context.

In skincare, we use GHK-Cu as a signaling peptide: not to exfoliate the surface or force rapid turnover, but to interact with processes involved in how skin maintains and remodels its underlying matrix.

What it brings to the formula.

GHK-Cu is best understood as a remodeling signal. Research in dermal fibroblasts has shown that the complex can influence extracellular-matrix turnover, including pathways involved in breaking down and reorganizing existing matrix. That distinction matters because healthy remodeling is not simply about making more collagen. Skin has to continually dismantle, reorganize, and rebuild structural material.

Experimental work has also demonstrated that copper delivered as the GHK-Cu complex can penetrate and remain within human skin in vitro, supporting the biological plausibility of topical delivery rather than treating the peptide as something that only works in a laboratory dish.

Cosmetically, that makes GHK-Cu most relevant to the long game: supporting the appearance of smoother texture, greater firmness and resilience, and skin that looks better organized over time. It is not an instant resurfacing ingredient, and we don’t formulate it as one.

The Alchemy rationale.

We use GHK-Cu because it gives us a way to support visible correction without building the formula around irritation, aggressive exfoliation, or forced turnover.

Alchemy 21/12 is barrier-first by design. That does not mean avoiding advanced actives. It means choosing them deliberately and placing them inside formulas that respect the condition of the skin receiving the signal. GHK-Cu fits that philosophy unusually well because its value is tied to remodeling, repair signaling, and long-horizon structural support rather than creating a dramatic surface event.

It also reflects the way we think about aging skin more broadly. The goal is not simply to make skin shed faster or temporarily look tighter. We want to support the conditions associated with better-organized, more resilient-looking skin over time, while keeping hydration, barrier support, and tolerability in the same conversation.

That is why GHK-Cu became the signal at the center of GHK Night Cream. We formulated around it with a deliberate concentration, a controlled pH environment, barrier-supportive lipids and ceramides, protective packaging, and refrigerated storage. The peptide is important. The system around the peptide is what makes it an Alchemy formula.

From the Bench

Formulation matters.

GHK-Cu is not an ingredient we treat like a decorative active that can simply be added to an existing base. Its chemistry becomes part of the formulation brief.

Preformulation work on GHK-Cu found the complex surprisingly stable in water and across roughly pH 4.5–7.4 under accelerated conditions, but more vulnerable under alkaline and oxidative stress. The same work characterized GHK-Cu as highly hydrophilic, which makes the environment around the peptide, including pH, oxidative exposure, and delivery system, part of the formulation problem rather than an afterthought.

That is why we formulate around GHK-Cu. We evaluate the entire ingredient system for compatibility, keep the finished formula within a controlled mildly acidic environment, and avoid treating every trendy active as an automatic roommate. With a metal-binding peptide, more ingredients do not necessarily make a more sophisticated formula. Sometimes sophistication is knowing what to leave out.

Delivery matters too. Experimental work has shown that topical GHK-Cu can enter and be retained within human skin in vitro, while formulation research continues to investigate carrier systems that can improve delivery of this very water-loving molecule. We chose to house GHK-Cu in a complete nighttime cream rather than a water-light standalone serum, surrounding the signal with the barrier support, hydration, lipids, and cushion we wanted in the same final step.

In GHK Night Cream, the formula, opaque airless vessel, and refrigerated storage are all part of the same decision. We do not think of stability as something that happens after formulation. Stability is formulation.

The blue peptide may be the headline. What we build around it determines whether it belongs in the bottle at all.

What the evidence can tell us.

GHK-Cu has an unusually long and interesting research history for a cosmetic peptide, but the type of evidence matters.

In fibroblast research, GHK-Cu has been shown to increase collagen synthesis at very low concentrations. Other work has shown effects on extracellular-matrix remodeling, including increased MMP-2 alongside its natural inhibitors, TIMP-1 and TIMP-2. That combination is important: the biology points toward remodeling and regulation, not simply turning collagen production “on.”

The dose story is equally interesting. Experimental responses have appeared at extremely low concentrations, and some effects are biphasic rather than endlessly dose-dependent. In normal human fibroblasts, for example, GHK-Cu increased glycosaminoglycan synthesis most strongly within a defined low-concentration range, with the response declining again at higher concentrations. More is not automatically more.

Topical delivery has also been investigated using human skin models. Ex vivo studies found that copper delivered as the GHK-Cu complex could penetrate and be retained within different layers of human skin under experimental conditions. That supports the plausibility of topical delivery, but an ex vivo penetration study is not the same thing as demonstrating a visible cosmetic result in a living person.

The human clinical evidence is considerably thinner than the mechanistic literature. In a small randomized study of 13 patients following CO₂ laser resurfacing, a GHK-Cu skincare regimen did not outperform the comparison regimen on objective measures of redness, wrinkles, or overall skin quality. Patients using GHK-Cu did, however, report greater improvement in overall skin quality. Interesting? Yes. Definitive? No.

Laboratory safety work is encouraging as well. In a keratinocyte model, GHK-Cu was not cytotoxic at the concentrations tested and did not significantly activate the irritation-related biomarkers measured in the study. That tells us something useful about the complex itself. It does not guarantee that every copper-peptide product, concentration, or finished formula will agree with every person’s skin.

Our read of the evidence: GHK-Cu is a credible signaling and matrix-remodeling ingredient with substantial mechanistic support and enough translational evidence to justify serious cosmetic interest. What it does not yet have is the depth of large, controlled human facial-aging trials available for some older actives. We formulate around what the evidence supports, and we leave the rest where it belongs: as a question still being studied.
