Post-Summer Skin Barrier Repair: Your Skin Would Like a Word

Summer had its moment. Autumn offers a chance to rethink correction, with peptides, growth factors, and a little less devotion to the idea that good skincare should make you suffer.

There’s a particular kind of light at the end of summer. The beach is still warm, the evenings are getting shorter, and nobody is quite ready to put the season away. Unless you have chickens, like I do, in which case you’ve been counting the minutes until the searing heat ends.

Your skin may also be ready for a change. A little more tightness after cleansing. A familiar serum that suddenly stings. Roughness where there used to be softness. Perhaps a few spots you don’t remember inviting.

As Labor Day closes the unofficial summer season, the beauty industry reaches for its usual September syllabus: restart retinol, book a peel, fade the pigment, erase the evidence. Autumn becomes permission to get serious. Serious, apparently, involves flaking, hot to the touch skin, embarrassing redness, and extreme sensitivity. And that’s supposed to be the correction from the sun!

I’d like us to be a little more discerning.

The change of season is a lovely metaphor for renewal, although skin doesn’t wait for the leaves to turn to begin renewing itself. What autumn gives us is a reason to reassess how we’re supporting that work. Modern skincare has more to offer than another round of irritation followed by an apology from your moisturizer.

What summer leaves behind

The outermost layer of skin is a remarkably organized structure of cells and lipids that helps retain water and keep irritants out. When its organization is disrupted, skin can become less comfortable and more difficult to keep hydrated.

UV exposure can affect that structure. Research on human stratum corneum, the outermost skin layer, has shown that UV irradiation weakens the connections between its cells and changes its physical strength. Sun exposure can affect the surface you rely on every day, as well as contribute to the pigment and lines you notice later.[1]

Chlorinated pools and saltwater add other summer exposures to the picture. In a study of young athletes, skin lost more water immediately after a two-hour session in an indoor chlorinated pool. Separate laboratory research found that saltwater exposure changed how the skin’s outermost layer dried and behaved mechanically. The pool study did not isolate chlorine as the sole cause, and the saltwater research was a separate experiment. But both give us reason to think beyond UV when we consider what summer asks of skin. The useful question to ask is what has changed in your skin. Does cleansing leave it tight? Does hydration seem to disappear? Are you planning your routine around what won’t sting? Persistent roughness, flaking, itching, and unusual sensitivity all deserve attention. They can accompany barrier impairment or a skin condition that needs assessment.

It also helps to separate the problems. Dehydration, an impaired barrier, uneven pigment, and deeper photodamage need different kinds of attention. Restoring comfortable hydration is a worthwhile result. So is addressing uneven tone. We can pursue both without pretending they’re the same task.

Retinol is not an obligation

Retinoids work. The clinical evidence is substantial. That still doesn’t make them a compulsory component of everyone’s skincare, or make their side effects a test of commitment.

Dryness, redness, peeling, and burning are recognized adverse effects. Tretinoin’s prescribing information specifically advises against using it on sunburned skin until recovery. If your skin is already struggling, its capacity to tolerate another source of irritation matters.[4]

A 48-week, double-blind trial compared 0.025% and 0.1% tretinoin. Both produced similar improvements in photoaging, but the higher concentration caused significantly more irritation. The researchers concluded that mechanisms other than irritation drove the improvement.[5]

The peeling was not evidence of the achievement. It was evidence of going too far than skin actually needed. Though the mechanics as to why are different, there is a similar result with GHK-Cu when you add too much signal that leads to diminishing, or even counterproductive returns.

Retinoids influence skin through receptor signaling; their action goes beyond surface turnover. What I question is the culture that has grown around them: tolerate the discomfort, manage the peeling, keep proving you can handle it. Accept visible distress now to deserve better skin later? That was Grandma’s skincare.

Alchemy is retinoid-free by design. I want meaningful correction, and I want skin to look and feel good while we pursue it. Comfort belongs in the performance brief.

HCSS: recovery has an active role

Hydrate. Calm. Strengthen. Signal.

These are the four functions of the Alchemy Method. Hydrate replenishes water. Calm addresses visible stress and discomfort. Strengthen supports the moisture barrier and resilience. Signal brings in targeted activity selected for the skin’s needs.

The order sets priorities. The functions work together.

A peptide chosen to support calm can be part of a barrier-first routine from the beginning. Hydration and lipids can remain central while we introduce more targeted correction. We adjust the emphasis as skin changes; we don’t switch off one function to begin another.

This matters because “barrier-first” has too often been reduced to the idea of putting all effective skincare on hold. I’m interested in choosing effective skincare for the job at hand. When skin is uncomfortable and reactive, helping it become calmer is a very good job.

Peptides and growth factors: different signals, different work

“Peptides” is a category, not a job description.

These small chains of amino acids can have very different biological roles. Their sequence and structure matter, as do their concentration, stability, and the formula around them. Some are investigated for soothing, others for processes associated with renewal or the skin’s supporting structure.

The science is also more specific than asking whether skin can “hear” a peptide. For some molecules, researchers have identified targets and mechanisms. For others, the explanation is still developing. The practical question is whether enough of the right molecule remains active, reaches the relevant site, and produces a useful effect in the finished formula.

People’s experiences can be valuable clues. Controlled studies help us work out what deserves the credit. Both should make us more curious, and more precise, about what each peptide is there to do.

PT-8: a signal to calm

Palmitoyl Tripeptide-8, or PT-8, is selected for soothing and sensitivity support. Its developer’s research examines responses associated with neurogenic inflammation, where nerve signals contribute to inflammatory activity in skin.[6]

That’s why it’s in Recover-Me Barrier Cream and has a place in our Barrier-First Starter. Its purpose is to help support calmer, more comfortable skin alongside the ingredients that address hydration and moisture retention.

There is nothing passive about that choice. A peptide can be doing precisely the work we want before aging and damage-related correction is even on the agenda.

Calm is not the absence of activity. It is often the purpose of the activity.

GHK-Cu: renewal beyond the lines

GHK-Cu, the copper peptide in our GHK Night Cream, illustrates another part of the picture. In laboratory skin models, researchers have studied its effects on markers involved in epidermal cell renewal and attachment. Those are aspects of skin biology with relevance beyond the surface appearance of a line.[7]

That wider interest in renewal is why copper peptides belong in our formulation philosophy. We think about the condition of the skin as well as the appearance we’re working toward. Hydration, comfort, and targeted correction should support the same ambition.

Different peptides bring different possibilities. Our next Sunday Journal will look more closely at those roles, including the distinction between a peptide selected for soothing and one selected for structural support. The name on the ingredient list is only the beginning of the conversation.

Growth factors: the next chapter of that ambition

Growth factors are part of the same amino-acid-based world. They’re signaling proteins or polypeptides, generally larger and more structurally complex than the short cosmetic peptides most people know. In skin biology, they interact with specific receptors involved in processes such as cell growth, maintenance, and repair.

They extend the possibilities of signaling in a direction I find particularly compelling: using a deeper understanding of skin’s own biology to guide how we approach visible renewal.

And the emerging studies are compelling. Core Biogenesis has investigated EGF and FGF-2 fused to oleosomes, natural lipid droplets from plant seeds. In a 44-person study conducted by AbiCh Lifeanalytics and published in SOFW Journal, the combination was tested against 0.3% retinol in the same base. By day 30, the growth-factor group showed a 25.5% reduction in wrinkle depth and a 27.2% reduction in wrinkle length from baseline. That’s a concrete reason to take this direction seriously. [8]
And here’s the part that deserves more volume: Core reports that its oleosome-fused EGF and FGF-2 combination outperformed 0.3% retinol (the MAXIMUM strength permitted by EU law) on wrinkle depth, wrinkle length, smoothness, and brightness, with faster visible results and without irritation. In that study, comfort didn’t cost performance, so why are we still accepting it in our skincare in 2026?

The delivery system is part of that result. A growth factor has to remain active and reach a relevant site in the skin; Core’s work investigates those practical challenges alongside visible outcomes. The evidence applies to the oleosome-fused combination tested, giving us a specific platform to learn from.

These are exactly the questions that make growth factors worth serious formulation work. Modern science is giving us more to investigate, more to measure, and more ways to pursue correction with comfort built into the ambition.

A post-summer routine with a purpose

If you're ready to start removing yet another summer fading in the rear view, start by noticing what your current routine is taking away. Persistent stinging, peeling, or discomfort is a reason to reassess an exfoliant or cosmetic retinoid. If it’s a prescribed treatment, discuss adjustments with your clinician. There’s no prize for being the most agreeable person in an argument with your own face.

Keep cleansing gentle and water lukewarm. Follow with hydration and a moisturizer that helps retain it. Panthenol-containing formulations have reduced water loss in human studies, and research on ceramide-containing moisturizers supports the value of well-formulated barrier lipids.[9,10]

Better skin, without the performance of suffering

I want skin that feels comfortable after cleansing, holds its hydration, looks clearer and more even, and responds well to the routine around it. I also want correction that takes visible aging seriously. I see no reason to lower either ambition.

That’s what barrier-first means to me. We address the condition of the skin as part of improving its appearance. Peptides already help shape that approach. Growth factors are part of what we’re building next.

Autumn can be a season of renewal without becoming a season of penance. You enjoyed your summer. Your skincare doesn’t need to make you answer for it.

Questions about barrier repair and signaling

How long does skin barrier repair take?

The timeline depends on the cause and extent of irritation, ongoing exposure, and any underlying skin condition. In feedback on our Barrier-First Starter, many people have reported more comfortable skin within one to two weeks. That’s an observation about comfort, rather than a measured deadline for complete barrier recovery. Persistent or worsening symptoms deserve professional assessment.

Can I use peptides while supporting a damaged skin barrier?

Yes, appropriately selected peptides can be part of the routine from the beginning. PT-8 is included in our barrier-first approach for soothing support. The choice depends on the peptide’s role and the complete formula, rather than treating every peptide as the same kind of active.

Does signaling only mean collagen and wrinkle correction?

In the Alchemy Method, signaling also includes activity selected to support calmer skin and recovery from visible stress. Addressing discomfort, roughness, and the visible consequences of damage belongs in the correction conversation alongside firmness and lines.

Are growth factors peptides?

Growth factors are proteins or polypeptides made from amino acids. Skincare generally discusses them separately from short cosmetic peptides because their structures, biological targets, and formulation requirements differ. They belong to the wider science of biological signaling.

Can skincare improve the visible effects of sun damage?

Skincare can improve certain visible concerns associated with sun exposure, including dryness, roughness, and uneven-looking skin.
